Leadership Lewis Cohort 4 - Session 2
Leadership Lewis Cohort 4 Explores Tourism, Technology, and Ethical Leadership
From artificial intelligence to local history, tourism, and a little friendly competition, Leadership Lewis Cohort 4 experienced a day full of learning, discovery, and connection on October 8!
Leadership Lewis Cohort 4 gathered for its second session at the historic Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (TALA) in Weston, where participants explored how technology, ethical leadership, and tourism contribute to the future of Lewis County.
The day combined professional development with a deeper appreciation for the people, places, and opportunities that make our community unique.
Exploring AI and Social Media
The session kicked off with Mike Ruffing of Problem Solvers, Inc., who introduced the group to artificial intelligence (AI) and social media. As technology continues to reshape the workplace and the way organizations communicate, understanding these tools is increasingly important for today's leaders. Participants explored how AI and social media can support business operations, communication, and community engagement.
Discovering Local History at TALA
Leadership Lewis participants then stepped back in time with a Civil War tour of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The historic landmark offered a unique opportunity to explore an important piece of West Virginia history while learning more about one of Lewis County's most recognizable attractions.
Experiences like this remind us that our community's history is not only something to preserve, but also an asset that attracts visitors and creates opportunities for local businesses.
Leading with Ethics and Integrity
Kevin Stalnaker of Leadership ERA led an engaging session on ethical leadership. Participants explored the importance of integrity, sound judgment, and values-based decision-making in leadership.
Whether leading a business, managing a team, or serving the community, ethical leadership builds trust and strengthens relationships. These skills are essential for leaders who want to make a lasting, positive impact in their organizations and throughout Lewis County.
Tourism: An Economic Driver for Lewis County
Chrissy Richards, Executive Director of the Lewis County Convention and Visitors Bureau, shared how tourism positively impacts Lewis County's economy. From overnight stays and restaurant visits to shopping, recreation, and local attractions, tourism creates opportunities for businesses and helps support the broader community.
Chrissy also shared a video showcasing attractions throughout Lewis County, highlighting the many experiences available to residents and visitors alike.
Her presentation reinforced an important message: Tourism is more than bringing visitors to our county. It is an opportunity to support local businesses, showcase our community, and strengthen our local economy.
Learning, Teamwork, and a Little Friendly Competition!
The group wrapped up the day at Extreme Adventures at Lewis County Park, where participants traded their classroom seats for mini golf and the high ropes course.
A lively mini golf competition brought out everyone's competitive spirit.
It was a fun way to put teamwork and connection into practice while enjoying one of Lewis County's recreational destinations.
Building Tomorrow's Leaders, Right Here at Home
Leadership Lewis is designed to develop stronger leaders by connecting personal growth, workplace leadership, and community engagement. Session 2 brought those themes to life by combining practical professional development with opportunities to discover the history, attractions, and economic assets of Lewis County.
Through experiences like these, Cohort 4 is building the knowledge, relationships, and leadership skills needed to help move our community forward.
Thank you to Mike Ruffing, Kevin Stalnaker, Chrissy Richards, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, and Extreme Adventures at Lewis County Park for helping make this an engaging and memorable day of learning!
